Warranty
All Zen Suspended Fireplaces come with a 2-year manufacturer’s warranty. Your warranty period begin’s from the date of delivery. This warranty is given in addition to consumer guarantees and does not exclude them.
We do not recommend installing in Alfresco areas that are exposed to the elements and are exposed to high moisture, morning frost/dew or heavy winds and rain. If the alfresco area is affected by moisture and wind consistently the paint finish will deteriorate quite quickly as the steel is not galvanised, it is not meant to be in contact with moisture or water. Take note if you live by the ocean, salty ocean spray will speed up this process and will erode the paint finish within months. Please check the location with us before proceeding with an order.
If the above occurs, it can be remedied by using a couple of coats of StoveBright Zinc Flat Black Silencer Aerosol followed by a couple of coats of StoveBright Satin Black 1990 Aerosol, available from StoveBright directly or your local fireplace retailer.
Zen Fireplaces recommends using a Qualified Solid Fuel Appliance Installer who is licensed to perform Mechanical Services Plumbing Work to install your Zen Suspended Fireplace. Only persons registered and / or licensed in plumbing mechanical services are permitted to install a solid fuel heater. A qualified installer will certify your installation and provide a certificate of compliance. If you have engaged a builder, they can subcontract the work out to a plumber who is qualified in mechanical services. See this page from the Victorian Building Authority for more information. Check our list of recommended installers for your state below.
As each installation will be different it is difficult for us to estimate your installation cost. It is best to speak with your builder or installer and get an estimate for your particular circumstances.
Installation Manual for Zen Elegante Suspended Fireplace below:
IMPORTANT: Please do not unwrap your fireplace (firebox) section fully before securing it to the lower section of flue. This will avoid any accidental scratches on the firebox surface while fitting. The paint is still soft and has not cured fully. Curing occurs after the first burn procedure. Once secured you can remove all wrapping.
Ceiling Flange Fixing – Steel Angle Support Bar
The Suspended Fireplace Ceiling Flange will need to have a steel beam or angle iron support bracket fabricated for above the ceiling in the roof cavity. The Ceiling Flange is then fixed to the bracket. This bracket and associated bolts are NOT supplied with the fireplace as it needs to be custom made for your particular engineered ceiling/roof design.
The steel angle bracket can be secured to the timber ceiling joists or beams. The Ceiling Flange cannot be fixed directly to the combustible timber joists.
Your installer will be able to properly advise on your particular application.
If you have no ceiling cavity, the ceiling flange can be fixed above or below steel beams spanning two structural walls. The beams need to be able to hold a weight of approx. 200kg.
Clearance
The Zen Elegante suspended fireplace installed with Appliance-Flue combination has been tested in two positions in a manner conforming to joint Australian/New Zealand Standard 2918:2018, Appendix B.
It is recommended that the Zen Elegante Suspended Fireplace is installed with 1025mm clearance off the side and back if installed next to a combustible wall (plaster board, timber) or combustible material. If the surrounding walls are non combustible such as brick, concrete, tile, stone, metal or steel then clearance is at the discretion of the installer/owner.
The fireplace can be positioned near glass in an aluminium or steel frame at a distance of 500mm. If the frame is timber the above combustible clearance needs to be maintained.
Note: If the fireplace is to be positioned near glass, we are not responsible for any discolouration of the glass, breakage or damage to the window system that may occur due to increased temperature radiating off the fireplace. Toughened safety glass would be preferable in this application which can resist a temperature differential of 250c and is not recommended to be exposed to heat exceeding 270c. Please check with your individual window manufacturer/installer.
There needs to be 1350mm clearance from the front opening of the fireplace in every installation and 500mm clearance from the finished floor level.
A minimum 1390mm deep x 1390mm wide x 50mm thick floor protector (skamol board, compressed board, stone, concrete, tile) should be used under and in front of the Suspended Fireplace base when installing the Suspended Fireplace above combustible flooring such as timber, laminate or carpet (see joint AS/NZS 2918:2018 3.3.2).
The floor protector should extend 300mm in front of the Suspended Fireplace door and be placed centrally in the 1390mm width. The Thermal resistivity of the floor protector is 0.06m².K/W for 50mm thick sheets.
If the floor is non combustible, tile, concrete or stone, no protector is necessary.
The Zen Elegante suspended fireplace installed with Appliance-Flue combination conforms to the requirements of the joint AS/NZS 2918:2018 Standard, Appendix B.
*The Suspended Fireplace can spin 360 degrees on its spigot. Therefore, if you plan to rotate the fireplace 360 degrees, 1350mm clearance needs to be maintained all the way around the fireplace from combustible walls or materials.
We recommend using a registered and licensed installer found here on our website or on the Australian Home Heating Association website.
Flue
To meet the standard of 4.6 metres minimum overall flue height. The Zen Elegante model will come with a standard single wall flue kit of 3500mm including double wall casing and a Stainless Steel Rain Hat for the above ceiling penetration.
This will allow for applications between the following parameters:
1400mm below ceiling (2100mm above ceiling) flue length (2.4m ceiling) to 2100mm below ceiling (1400mm above ceiling) flue length (3.1m ceiling), depending on your ceiling cavity height and roof penetration clearance requirements.
We will supply 2000mm of double wall flue casing as standard.
If your installation does not fall within the above standard lengths and you require more single wall flue or double wall flue casing please get in touch.
If you know the answers to the following questions we can help you with your required flue length with more specific advice:
What is the measurement from your floor to ceiling where the fireplace will be located?
What is the measurement from the ceiling penetration to the roof penetration where the fireplace will be located?
Is your ceiling flat or pitched, if pitched what is the angle degree?
Is your roof flat or pitched?
If your roof is pitched, what is the measurement from the roof ridge to where the fireplace flue termination will be located?
Do you have to go through a second storey?
What is the floor material where the fireplace will be located?
Please check your individual circumstances for correct flue length. As each install is different. Please contact our team to discuss your requirements.

Flue Length and Termination
In accordance with AS/NZS 2918-2018 overall flue height needs to extend no less than 4.6 metres above the floor or floor protector to the top of flue termination. This includes the floor clearance, fireplace and total flue length.
To meet the above standard both models will come with the following standard flue kit:
Single Wall Flue: 3500mm
Double Wall Casing: 2000mm
Single Wall Flue Length
“Internal/Below Ceiling Penetration
Your below ceiling single wall flue length is determined by measuring your floor to ceiling height. If a combustible floor you will need to measure from the top of the floor protector (See Installation Requirements for each Fireplace) to the ceiling.
From this measurement, say for instance 3000mm ceiling height, deduct 500mm minimum floor clearance, (include 40mm or 50mm floor protector if required if floor is combustible) then deduct the height of your desired fireplace 500mm (Elegante) or 800mm (Occhio).
If you were to select the Elegante model, your below ceiling single wall flue length would be 2000mm in this application.
External/Above Ceiling Penetration
Your above ceiling penetration single flue length is determined by measuring the distance from ceiling penetration to roof penetration. On a flat roof this may be 500mm for instance. On a pitched roof it is dependent on the location and the angle of the roof and where the fireplace is located.
For instance on our flat roof example with a 500mm roof cavity the flue length for this section would be 500mm.
Pitched Roof/Second Story/Ceiling Cavities/Attics
If your roof is pitched, you have an attic or a second story above, it is best to measure the height from ceiling penetration to roof penetration, including any other cavities or spaces the flue needs to travel through to reach roof penetration.
Termination
Please see figures below with external termination height requirements. This will allow you to estimate your single wall flue height for above ceiling penetration. The total flue height from the floor or floor protector to the top of termination needs to be no less than 4.6 metres (including floor clearance and fireplace height).
In our example and going by the below diagram the above roof termination length would be 600mm, then to meet the standard 4.6 metres total flue length we would add another 500mm for a total of 1100mm above roof termination length.
This height is made up of:
500mm floor clearance
500mm fireplace height (Elegante)
2000mm below ceiling penetration height
500mm above ceiling penetration cavity height
1100mm above roof penetration height
Flat Roof Installation
Less than 5%
The top of the flue must be 60cm above the roofline. Alternatively, there must be a minimum distance of 3 meters from any higher section of roof
Ensure the double wall flue is installed as per AS/NZS 2918-2018.
Pitched Roof Installation
The top of the flue must be 60cm above the roofline. Alternatively, there must be a minimum distance of 3 meters from any higher section of roof.
Ensure the double wall flue is installed as per AS/NZS 2918-2018.
Elegante

Curing the paint – First burn
Do the following BEFORE you fire the fire for the first two times:
Ventilate: Open all doors and windows where the fireplace is located. Use a fan to move the air around faster.
Vacate: Leave the area when doing the initial burns as the heating process will release non-toxic fumes which may cause distress for children, pets or anyone with breathing difficulties.
Clean: Wipe the fireplace to remove any dust or fingerprints. After the curing the process the fireplace won’t need this prior to each burn.
Most high-temperature paints operate in the same way. There are two resins in the paint. One resin dries at room temperature, giving the paint the initial properties seen on an un-used stove. Then, when fires are built in the stove, this air-dry resin burns away. The other resin is a silicon resin (silicone gives the paint it’s high heat resistance) that will not cure until it is heated to high temperatures. This cross-linking occurs at around 200°C – 232°C. The air dry resin will burn away at about 315°C.
We recommend a two-stage curing process. Do not burn at full heat (480°C or more) for the first two burns as this could “shock” the paint and cause failure.
The initial fire should be medium temperature (232°C) for about 60 minutes. (The fire should measure approximately 300mm in diameter). As the paint heats it will soften, even appear wet, and must not be touched with anything. Gradually, at the hottest spots, the paint will again appear dry. Allow the fire to die down and allow the firebox to cool. When this process is complete, the paint will be ready for the next stage.
A second, hotter burn of around 315°C for another 45 minutes will burn away the air-dry resin. (The fire should measure approximately 350mm diameter). You will know when this occurs because the process creates some smoke and odour. The nontoxic smoke is primarily Carbon Dioxide, but there are other residual components that make it smell bad and may cause physical distress for some individuals or animals. It will also displace oxygen, so we recommend a “ventilate and vacate” procedure which calls for open windows and fans during the burn-in process. Once more allow the fire to die down and allow the firebox to cool.
Until the second stage is reached, the curing process will be incomplete and may be a smoky annoyance at a later time. Stove Bright® may appear to be a little glossy when first applied. The application of high heat (as described above) will cause all liquid paint to lose any appearance of gloss and become flat. Metallic colours sometimes appear to have some gloss due to the metallic fleck in the paint, but are still flat.
Cleaning
Cleaning your fireplace is quite a simple process. Always wait until your fireplace has fully cooled down and there is no active fire or embers left in the firebox. Once the fireplace has cooled, simply place on some rubber gloves, grab a bucket and some old newspaper.
Remove any large pieces of burned timber. Once you have removed all large pieces, remove the fireplace grate and place on the old newspaper on the floor to not dirty your flooring or furniture. If you have a small ash shovel, scoop up the remaining ash from the firebox and place in the bucket.
If you want to clean the internal firebox further, use a mixture of warm water and ph neutral soap to remove any ash and soot. Gently scrub away using a soft sponge. Do not use any solvents as this may damage the paint. Clean your fireplace grate with the same warm soapy water and sponge and allow to dry.
Once the above has been reviewed we will either offer a repair or replace all or part of your door.

Can your Suspended Fireplaces be installed outside in an Alfresco area?
We do not recommend installing in Alfresco areas that are exposed to the elements and are exposed to high moisture, morning frost/dew or heavy winds and rain. If the alfresco area is affected by moisture and wind consistently the paint finish will deteriorate quite quickly as the steel is not galvanised, it is not meant to be in contact with moisture or water. Take note if you live by the ocean, salty ocean spray will speed up this process and will erode the paint finish within months. Please check the location with us before proceeding with an order.
When will my Suspended Fireplace be delivered?
You can order a Zen Suspended Fireplace directly on the website or by getting in touch with us and obtaining a quote.

Where are your Suspended Fireplaces made?
Both Zen Suspended Fireplaces have been designed, tested and accredited in Australia to strict AS/NZS Standards for solid fuel burning heaters.
Our suspended fireplaces are hand made in China by skilled metal craftsman who meticulously shape and weld cold rolled steel into the unique designs that you see in the Occhio and Elegante.
At Zen Fireplaces quality control is paramount so each fireplace must pass our rigorous quality assurance checks prior to shipment.
How do I install my new Suspended Fireplace?
As each installation will have different requirements and safety is paramount, we recommend using a Qualified Solid Fuel Appliance Installer who is licensed to perform Mechanical Services Work to install your Zen Suspended Fireplace. If using a Registered Builder they can subcontract out the work to an installer.
In Australia only persons registered and / or licensed in mechanical services are permitted to install a solid fuel heater. As each installation will be different it is difficult for us to estimate your installation cost. It is best to speak with your installer and get an estimate for your particular circumstances. Please check our Recommended Installers to find one near you.
Or please refer to the Australian Home Heating Association link below for a licensed installer in your area.

Is my Suspended Fireplace safe for children?
As with any open fire or fuel burning appliance, they should never be left unattended. Extra caution should be exercised when young children are present and they should not be left alone near an open fire.
The suspended fireplace exterior steel does absorb a lot of the heat from the fire, but is still extremely hot to touch by hand. We recommend the utmost care is taken when the suspended fireplace is in operation and young children are nearby to prevent any injury. Parents should explain the dangers of an open fire to their children and be in constant supervision during operation. To increase safety if children are present you could look to using a temporary heat shield stand around the fireplace.
Are the Suspended Fireplaces efficient for heating my home?
Yes, with power outputs of approximately 7-8kw, each Zen Suspended Fireplace can comfortably and efficiently heat an area in excess of 130sqm. The Occhio fireplace has a larger firebox capacity than the Elegante, enabling it to heat an even larger area than stated above.
Which is the best type of wood to burn?
These are the most popular woods by each Australian state as stated by the Firewood Association of Australia:
Western Australia: Jarrah and Wandoo wood
Northern Territory and Queensland: Ironbark and Box wood
New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia: River Red Gum wood
Tasmania: Brown Peppermint wood
What fire wood should I avoid?
To avoid noxious fumes and health hazards avoid wood from:
Telephone piles
Railroad beams
Pressure treated wood
Particle boards
Laminated, stained or painted wood
Pieces of old furniture
Turpentine wood
White Stringybark
Also avoid
Books and newspapers (except for lighting)
Cartons and any plastics
Coal
How do I store firewood?
For the optimal performance of your Zen Suspended Fireplace, it is essential to burn dry wood. The maximum moisture content for a log ready to burn is 20%. Depending on how it is stored, wood can be burned 18–24 months after it is cut. The storage conditions for wood are very important. Wood should be stacked in a dry and well-ventilated location. Ideally it should be stored under a cover, with the sides left open for sufficient ventilation. Do not place logs directly on the ground, but on pallets or wooden planks to allow air to circulate around them. If wood is not stored properly, it can become moist and thus burn less efficiently and emit pollutants as it burns.
Can you cook in the fireplace?
Absolutely. Zen Suspended Fireplaces can be used to cook many different items, one being wood fired pizza. Included in the package is an 8mm fireplace grate that the fire will sit on. Once you have created a fire that is hot enough and has hot embers, you can spread the fire around the fireplace to make space for a stone pizza base (sold separately). Caution is advised when manoeuvring the fire, high temperature fire gloves should be used.
When should the chimney be swept?
The chimney should be swept at least 1-2 times per year to remove any build up of soot and keep the flue clean. This will remove the risk of harmful air pollutants and protect you from the risk of fire. To avoid any dangers, we advise calling a dedicated chimney sweep to conduct the cleaning of your Zen Suspended Fireplace Chimney.
